PT for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

TMD TalkOn Friday March 18th, 2016, Annetta and Cameron had the wonderful opportunity to speak to local dentists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons about a physical therapy approach to temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD).  Alongside Dr. Westover, DDS, Dr. Coviello, DDS, and Dr. Starley, DMD, the areas local healthcare professionals gained a wealth of knowledge on the importance of interdisciplinary care to help serve those with TMD.

TMD is a cluster of symptoms including jaw pain and fatigue, difficulty opening your mouth to eat or talk, ringing in the ears, dizziness, headaches, and neck pain.  Physical Therapists are trained in the mechanics of the TMJ and surrounding muscles and joints.  As part of the evaluation process, head, neck and jaw movement/posture is examined.  With findings from the evaluation, an individualized, patient-centered treatment is developed by your physical therapist.  This treatment may include education, exercises, hands-on treatment, and self-management strategies to assist the patient to returning to pain free and symptom free quality of life.
