Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
(IASTM)
What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization?
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a sub-type of manual therapy using instruments or tools to perform soft tissue treatments. This includes addressing trigger points, knots in a muscle and fascial mobility. Cupping is another form of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization as well.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization can be incorporated in your rehabilitation plan when appropriate. Research has shown a variety of ways that IASTM works including improving blood flow to the areas treated, improving movement of fluids in fascia and connective tissues and over time leading to better alignment of the fibers in our soft tissues. The better aligned the fibers the better the tissue functions.
